Shoe fence makes tracks for safety
The controversial South Island shoe fence has been found a new home, at the eastern end of the historic Burkes Pass township in the Mackenzie country. The fence, on State Highway 8, 22km east of Lake Tekapo, began 25 years ago when a pair of boots was hung on the fence by a landowner. The number of shoes there has since grown into the thousands. Their weight is gradually dragging the fence closer to the ground and it is no longer stock-proof. Litter is increasing and items other than shoes are being left behind. Transit New Zealand and the Mackenzie District Council say the fence is a considerable safety risk, following a recent accident. Landowners Alastair and Lucy Munro have agreed to take the shoes down immediately. - NZPA
